Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park
A 15-acre archaeological park marking the legendary landing site of Juan Ponce de León in 1513, featuring a natural spring, historic exhibits, and live peacocks.
The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park encompasses 15 acres along the St. Augustine waterfront, marking what is traditionally believed to be the landing site of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León in 1513. While historians debate whether this is truly where Ponce de León first set foot in Florida, the park offers a fascinating journey through the early history of European exploration and settlement in the Americas.
The park's centerpiece is the legendary spring that gave Florida its reputation as the land of the "Fountain of Youth." Visitors can drink from the natural spring water, which flows from the Floridan Aquifer, and decide for themselves whether it possesses any rejuvenating properties. The spring was sacred to the Timucuan Indians who inhabited this area long before European contact.
Beyond the legend, the Fountain of Youth is a legitimate archaeological site of significant historical importance. Excavations have uncovered evidence of the first Christian mission in the United States, established by Spanish missionaries in 1587. Visitors can see the original Timucuan Indian burial ground and learn about the native peoples who called this place home for thousands of years.
The park features numerous attractions and exhibits, including a planetarium show about Spanish navigation, a replica of the original mission church, cannon firing demonstrations, and extensive grounds home to dozens of free-roaming peacocks. The Timucuan village replica provides insight into native life before and after European contact.
The waterfront location offers beautiful views of the Intracoastal Waterway and makes the park a pleasant place to spend a few hours exploring history in a natural setting.
