Flagler College

A private liberal arts college housed in the former Hotel Ponce de León, a stunning Spanish Renaissance masterpiece built by Henry Flagler in 1888.

About Flagler College

Flagler College occupies one of the most spectacular buildings in Florida—the former Hotel Ponce de León, a Gilded Age masterpiece that stands as a testament to the vision and ambition of industrialist Henry Morrison Flagler. Built between 1885 and 1888, this National Historic Landmark represents the pinnacle of Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture in America.

Henry Flagler, co-founder of Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller, envisioned the Hotel Ponce de León as the crown jewel of his Florida empire. He spared no expense in its construction, employing the renowned architectural firm of Carrère and Hastings and filling the interior with works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including stunning stained glass windows and decorative elements throughout.

The hotel was revolutionary for its time—one of the first major buildings in America constructed entirely of poured concrete and among the first to be fully electrified, powered by 4,000 electric lights installed by Thomas Edison's company. The building featured steam heat, electric elevators, and the most modern amenities available to its wealthy Gilded Age guests.

After serving as a luxury hotel for decades, the building was converted to Flagler College in 1968. Today, the college offers guided tours that showcase the building's magnificent public spaces, including the grand dining room (now the college cafeteria) with its Tiffany windows and hand-painted murals, the opulent rotunda with its stunning dome, and the lush interior courtyard.

The college campus extends beyond the original hotel, encompassing several other historic buildings in downtown St. Augustine, but the Ponce de León Hall remains the centerpiece and primary reason visitors come to marvel at this architectural treasure.
