Fort Matanzas National Monument

A Spanish coquina watchtower built in 1742 to guard the southern approach to St. Augustine, accessible by free ferry boat.

About Fort Matanzas National Monument

Fort Matanzas National Monument preserves a small but historically significant Spanish fortification built between 1740 and 1742. This coquina watchtower was constructed to defend the southern approach to St. Augustine via the Matanzas Inlet, closing a back door that had allowed English forces to previously threaten the city.

The name "Matanzas" means "slaughters" in Spanish, referring to a tragic event in 1565 when Spanish forces killed over 200 French Huguenot shipwreck survivors near this inlet. This grim history underscores the strategic importance of this waterway and the fierce colonial competition for control of Florida.

The fort itself is a compact but well-designed structure, standing 50 feet tall with walls made of the same coquina stone used in the larger Castillo de San Marcos. A small garrison of five to seven soldiers manned the tower, watching for enemy ships attempting to use the inlet to approach St. Augustine from the south. The fort's cannons could effectively block any such attempt.

Access to the fort is by a free ferry boat that departs from the visitor center on the mainland. The short boat ride across the Matanzas River adds to the experience, offering views of the coastal marshland and opportunities to spot dolphins, manatees, and wading birds. Boardwalks on the fort's island lead visitors through maritime hammock forest to the tower.

The visitor center on the mainland features exhibits about the fort's history, a bookstore, and nature trails through the surrounding coastal environment. This National Monument offers a quieter, more intimate experience than its larger cousin, the Castillo de San Marcos.
